Warrandyte South sits just south of the Warrandyte township, in the green belt between Park Orchards and Wonga Park. It is the acreage side of Warrandyte, and the roads here are quieter, with established gardens on big blocks rather than the tighter bush blocks along the river.

Houses here tend to have been owned a long time, and the furniture reflects that: dining settings and lounge suites bought decades ago and kept in good order rather than replaced every few years. When that furniture starts to show its age, the frame underneath is very often still sound, which is exactly the situation reupholstery is built for.

Pickup and delivery are by arrangement, and the big blocks on this side of Warrandyte leave plenty of room to get a lounge or a set of dining chairs in and out without fuss.

Furniture from long-held acreage homes is rarely a rescue job. It is more likely to be a good lounge suite or dining setting that has done twenty or thirty years of honest family use and is ready for a new cover rather than a trip to the tip. The frames on pieces like this are usually hardwood and worth every bit of the work.

Given the size of the blocks and how much outdoor living they support, outdoor and semi-outdoor furniture is a natural fit for this pocket. We make bench cushions, verandah seating and the odd custom piece built to fit an existing outdoor setting, all to measure.

Where a set of dining chairs or a lounge has been handed down through a family, we treat it the same way we would an antique: check what is worth keeping in the frame before quoting on the cover, rather than assuming everything needs replacing.

On acreage blocks with mature gardens, furniture near big windows or an outdoor room tends to fade and dry out faster than furniture tucked into a darker room closer to the city. Webbing loses its tension, foam can go brittle years earlier than it should, and cushion covers fade unevenly if they are never turned or swapped.

Because a lot of the furniture here is older and well made, the frame is usually the least of our worries: it is the foundations under the cover that let a piece down first. We replace webbing and re-tie springs nine-way by hand where the frame calls for it, then rebuild the seat in Dunlop high-resilience foam, 200 density for a firmer seat or 165 for something softer, both backed by a ten-year Dunlop warranty.

For outdoor and semi-outdoor cushions we talk through fabric wear up front, since a covered verandah setting still takes more sun and moisture than an indoor lounge, and it is easier to choose the right fabric at the quote stage than to redo a cushion in a year.

Reupholstery, machining and French polishing happen together at our Eltham North workshop, so a lounge that needs new fabric and a French polished timber leg is one job, not three. Between us we carry around a hundred years of trade: fifty years as a restorer and French polisher, thirty as a machinist, twenty two in upholstery.

A proper reupholstery quote covers stripping the piece back to the frame, repairing any joints, renewing webbing and springs, rebuilding with quality foam, and then cutting and fitting the new cover. We quote the work in front of us rather than a flat rate, so sometimes we come in lower than another quote and sometimes higher, but a price well under what decent materials cost at wholesale usually means something has been left out of the job.
