Advice · from our Eltham workshop

Is it worth reupholstering, or should you buy new?

Reupholstering is usually worth it when the frame is solid: recovering a well-made piece costs a fraction of replacing it with the same quality, and older frames are often better built than new furniture. It's rarely worth it for cheap flat-pack or a frame that's beyond repair. Send Dylberry Design a photo for an honest answer within 24 hours.

It's the question we get asked most. Here's the honest answer we'd give you over the phone, when reupholstering pays off, when it doesn't, and what actually drives the cost.

Is your piece worth reupholstering?

Answer five quick questions for an honest, no-obligation read on whether recovering your sofa or chair is likely to pay off. The frame is the real test, so send a photo after for the definitive answer.

This is a guide, not a valuation. A frame that looks “gone” is often very fixable, so we’d always rather see a photo before you decide.

Somewhere in most Melbourne homes there's a sofa or armchair that's sagging, worn or just the wrong colour now, but you can't quite bring yourself to throw it out. Maybe it was expensive. Maybe it was your grandmother's. Maybe it's just really comfortable and nothing in the shops feels as solid.

The good news: more often than you'd think, that piece is worth saving. The honest news: not always. Here's how we'd help you decide.

    When reupholstering is worth it

As a rule of thumb, if the bones are good, recovering it costs a fraction of replacing it with something of the same quality, and you end up with a better-made piece than most new furniture on the floor today.

Not sure which camp your piece is in? Send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly, including if we think you're better off not spending the money.

    When it might not be

We'd rather tell you straight than take on a job that won't serve you. Reupholstering is usually not the call when:

Even then, it's worth a quick photo first, frames that look "gone" are often very fixable, and we re-glue, re-web and rebuild more than people expect.

    What drives the cost

Every job is different, which is why we quote from a photo rather than a price list. The main things that move the number:

This is why we can't give a firm price until you've chosen your fabric, and we never start work until you've approved the quote. No surprises.

    How it works with us

    Common questions

Is it cheaper to reupholster or buy new?

If the frame is solid, reupholstering usually costs a fraction of replacing it with furniture of the same quality, and older frames are often better made than new. If it's cheap flat-pack, buying new can make more sense. Send a photo and we'll give you an honest answer.

How much does it cost to reupholster a sofa in Melbourne?

It depends most on the fabric you choose, plus the size, condition and detail of the piece. That's why we quote from a photo and firm it up once you've picked your fabric, before any work starts.

Can you reupholster an old or antique chair?

Yes, antique and fine furniture is one of our specialities, using traditional methods where the piece calls for it. We restore the frame and finish as well as the upholstery.

Do you pick up and deliver?

Yes, carefully, across all of Melbourne by arrangement. We're based in Eltham.

Is it cheaper to reupholster or just buy a new sofa?

A budget flat-pack sofa will usually be cheaper to replace, but for a solid, well-built or higher-end piece, reupholstery is often the smarter spend and keeps a frame you cannot easily buy again. The honest test is to compare our quote against a genuinely comparable new piece.

How do I know if my sofa is worth reupholstering?

The frame is the deciding factor. If the timber is solid and the piece is comfortable and well-proportioned, it is almost always worth restoring, and we will tell you honestly if we think it is not.

Is it worth reupholstering furniture that has sentimental value?

For heirloom and sentimental pieces, reupholstery lets you keep something meaningful while making it sound and usable for years more, which is not something a new purchase can replace. We take that kind of work seriously in our workshop.

Does reupholstering count as a sustainable choice?

Yes, restoring a solid piece keeps it out of landfill and avoids the resources that go into making and shipping something new. Keeping a good frame in service is one of the more sustainable things you can do with furniture.

Will a reupholstered sofa last as long as a new one?

With a sound frame, fresh fire-grade foam and quality fabric, a reupholstered piece can outlast much of the new furniture on the market, because the structure underneath is already proven. The result is only as good as the frame and the workmanship, which is where our experience comes in.
